Who the heck is Inspired Mayhem?
We’re just ordinary folks, but a little sillier. We are school teachers, website developers, accountants. We range in age from mid-20′s to mid-50′s. We all love to dance, we all love to play, and we all love being alive.
What the frig are we doing? I know, it’s kinda weird. When we started making our first video, Stoner Park, a five year old (Finn) interrupted to tell us: “Stop doing your tricks!” Because even a 5 year old knows that grown-ups aren’t supposed to act like that.
But that’s the point. By 5 years old, we already know that it’s not right to be silly? To look foolish?
IMO, there is a fundamental sickness in our society, which is that we are over-reliant on the parent-child model. Our government is a parent, politicians act like we’re children. Our bosses treat us like children. Religion acts like our parents. Marketing treats us like children by enticing us to feel like we’re parents. Watch kids, and you see some just love bossing the others around. “That’s not how it’s done!”
Kids are in an awful hurry to become grown-up, because they see all the power there. But once they arrive, they have (a little) power, but they’ve also lost the fire, the humor, the curiosity, the possibility, the magic that come with being children.
Most parents, meanwhile, are either preaching obedience, which is more like training a prize dog than raising a Buddha. Or they are trying to fulfill their own childhood lack by gratifying their children. Neither encourages the child to find their own desire, their own dreams.
So IMP are grown-ups who are also becoming children again. We learn by playing, learn to trust our instincts, learn to enjoy our curiosity without the constant societal drum-beat of “grow up, pay attention, get real, stop dreaming.” We learn to grow younger.
And, of course, we are inspired by all the giants who came before us. By Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Jackie Chan, who constantly redefined the relationship between the human body and the material world. By Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O and all the great Jackass fools, who embrace chaos, and make great play of flipping common sense and taboos. By cutting edge dance companies like Diavolo and Pilobilus. By the street sports of parkour and free-running, especially the example of David Belle. By great stunt men and combat choreographers whose names we don’t know. By sidwalk filmmakers like Spike Jonze, who never lets a big budget get between him and a great idea. By all those people who we envied growing up because they were more free than us.
And finally, a story which makes no sense, but which may very well be useful in an internet search:
We love sweet cute fuzzy furry animals doing tricks, but our hound and cat are not exotic enough. At the farm, the rooster’s crow was immense, but a throbbing head-ache caused a member of the board to wack the cock. What a boob! It’s okay; the penile code of Virgin ia allows for hot chicks to be separated from their roost. Just a little tit for tat; that’s what we get for living in a sexy state whose logo is: Vagina is for Lovers. Lots of boobs. As Mick Jagger sang in “Shattered”: sex, sex, sex, sex, sex and look at me. Try singing that like you were giving a sexy massage to Paris Hilton kissing Britney Spears, or Lindsay Lohan caught on tape. Free is the cleavage of the internet. It grabs your attention and makes you stupid. Oh, yeah, I forgot to say lesbians.
